What would YOU do?

Your challenge. Should you accept it...

You have been given $9 million dollars to invest in your IT shop.

You must invest this money across three domains:

People

Process

Technology

You must spend all the money (assume a fat bonus for your efforts in included).

So then, how do you spend it?

Are you a people person who believes more people = more productivity?

Perhaps you would hire top talent and raise the bar on quality?

Ah, but there a those who believe in process optimization...Cisk Zigma and all...will you deliver a manufacturing mindset?

Maybe a new or contemporary tool, software or mega server can make you a success?

It's all up to you...Do it!

A typical scenario in corporate world where you have money to spend but don't have business case. You spend money without long term goal & objectives.

Let's forget about business case or problem statement. Question is where to put more money technology, people or process. First invest money to improve skills of existing people, these people improves process and right process will improve technology automatically.

$9 million? from the sky? i'd focus on the talent. training/tools for the people i have. and i'd do selective hiring of new talent...people with skills and traits i need to bring my entire team up a level -- assuming the money is sustainable to pay salary more than year 1 :)

i'd also carve out some money as an r&d/innovation fund. that way, when my talented team has an idea, they'll have the means to experiment.

and naturally, all my investment would be "business-driven".

I would spend all $9 million cloning myself as more of me would equal a level of productivity not previously seen...

1. Establish a business architecture

Any business system is a complex dynamic mixture of processes and services. The composition and the structure of this mixture are unique for each organisation, but the structures share hierarchical, multi-layer and fractal characteristics (or patterns).

Business arhcitecture is about how to structure (to provide future flexibility) and optimise your business system.

2-N. Use this business architecture to improve the organisational business performance via many small and agile projects. Of course depending on the changing situation (current system and business priorities).

Thanks,
AS (www.samarin.biz)

As I already have an architectural framework for improving BPM systems, where is this IT shop?

I would bring in a few good people to implement some world class business processes and governance models. I would lean on partners to assist in the implementation. This would allow me to ramp up early on and and release the external resources later.

Then I would implement a world class enterprise architecture that gives the users flexibility and visibility into their processes. Once I have the everything up and running I would hire the best people I could to keep everything running. One of my goals would be to minimize the amount of people needed to run the business.

I'd leverage a ton of open source technologies and save my money to hire the best in the business at top notch salaries. I would give huge performance bonuses to ensure that the team delivers.
